Children on board

Contents

A child's age is taken on the day of departure, not on the day the ticket was bought.

Under 6

A child under 6 travels free and without a ticket if they do not take a seat of their own. One such child per adult passenger - that right is written into the Rules in as many words.

If more than one child under 6 travels with one adult, a child's ticket is bought for every seat taken. No more than two children under 6 may share one berth.

If you want a child under 6 to have a seat of their own, buy them a child's ticket.

From 6 to 14

A child's ticket at a 25% discount (a coefficient of 0.75 on both the ticket and the berth charge). The discount is given without producing documents at booking, but a document showing the child's age is needed at boarding.

Under 14 - only with an adult

Children under 14 are carried on passenger trains only in the company of an adult. The exception is organised groups with an appointed leader: Group travel.

From 14

A full ticket. A child's ticket is only re-issued as a full one when the child has already turned 14 on the date of departure.

What documents are needed

Whoever is travelling with a child under 14 must carry a document confirming the child's age and show it at boarding and at inspection. For children under 16 the Rules accept: a birth certificate, a notarised copy of one, a parent's passport with the child entered in it, a Ukrainian citizen's passport, or the child's international passport.

Compartments

A family compartment takes no more than three adults and the children under 6 with them; it is sold as a single ticket.

In men's and women's compartments, children under 6 of either sex may travel without a ticket of their own if they do not take a separate seat.

How to book this with us

In the booking form, choose the category for each seat: "Adult" or "Child 6-14". For a child, set the document type to "Birth certificate" and enter its number.

A child under 6 without a seat of their own is not entered in the order: no ticket is issued for them. Simply bring the birth certificate with you.

Children with disabilities and their escorts are covered by separate rules - Concessions and discounts.

Small things people usually ask

  • A pram may be carried against the hand-luggage allowance when the child is travelling with you.
  • When several passengers are seated together the ticket office usually splits upper and lower berths evenly, but an exception may be made for passengers with children.
  • If a carriage is detached, passengers with children have priority when they are moved to another.
  • UZ publishes rules of conduct on the railway for children separately.
