Luggage and hand luggage
The allowances are set by the carrier, JSC Ukrainian Railways. This is a retelling of sections 15 and 22 of the Carriage rules; what applies is the source.
Hand luggage
Hand luggage is what you can carry easily and stow without difficulty in the places provided for it in the carriage.
Up to and including 36 kg - free, on a full, concession, child's or even free ticket, provided the sum of the three dimensions does not exceed 200 cm.
From 36 to 50 kg - the excess is paid for at the luggage tariff. No more than 14 kg of excess is allowed, and only outside carriages with seating; it is covered by an LU-12a receipt or an electronic carriage document.
Over 50 kg is not accepted for carriage in passenger carriages at all.
Equipment and objects whose three dimensions add up to more than 200 cm are not accepted in any carriage. Carriages with sleeping berths do not accept equipment wider than the compartment doorway.
What may travel over the allowance
Free and on top of the 36 kg: a briefcase, a handbag, skis with poles, a snowboard, fishing rods, a camera, a video camera and other small items that fit in the hand-luggage space.
Counted against the hand-luggage allowance: a pram, when a child is travelling with you, and one bicycle, dismantled and packed - details on bicycles.
Where it travels
- Compartment, open-plan and sleeping carriages. Lower berths - in the lockers under the seats; upper berths - on the third shelves of open-plan carriages, in the recesses of compartment carriages, on the special upper shelves of sleeping carriages.
- General carriages. Odd-numbered seats - in the lockers under the seats; even-numbered seats and seats lettered "a" - on the third shelves of the bay.
- Regional train, Regional express, Intercity, Intercity+. Under the seats, on the side upper shelf and in the spaces specially fitted for it.
Putting luggage in vestibules, in the aisle of the saloon or in compartment passageways is forbidden.
Keeping hand luggage safe is its owner's business. The attendant must take such measures as are within their power, but responsibility for the things beside you remains yours.
At stations open for luggage operations you can weigh your luggage before boarding, pay for excess weight, or hand part of it in as luggage.
Luggage
Whatever does not pass as hand luggage is handed in separately at the station ticket office. Luggage travels in the luggage van and is released at the destination station against a luggage receipt.
- The minimum chargeable weight is 10 kg. Part of 10 kg counts as a whole 10.
- The price depends on the distance carried.
- The minimum declared value is UAH 10; part of UAH 10 counts as a whole 10.
- Per-item objects - bicycles, wheelchairs, prams and children's cars - are charged as 20 kg per item.
- Motorcycles, scooters, mopeds, powered wheelchairs and electric scooters - by actual weight.
- Loading and unloading at terminal and intermediate stations is already included in the tariff.
Luggage is generally accepted no earlier than twenty-four hours before the train departs; things handed in earlier attract a storage charge.
No charge is made for arranging or returning "luggage in hand".
Left luggage
Short-term storage of hand luggage at stations is in automatic and staffed left-luggage offices. Opening hours, the weight limit per item and the rules for accepting particular things are posted inside the left-luggage office.
What may not be carried
Weapons - except service and hunting weapons held with a permit; explosive, poisonous, foul-smelling, infectious or radioactive substances; spirit, petrol, paraffin, acetone and other flammable and readily ignitable substances; things that could spoil or soil other passengers' property. Carrying wild animals as hand luggage is forbidden.
Animals
The rules for animals changed in March 2026 and need a conversation of their own - Animals on board.
If luggage is lost or damaged
A commercial report is drawn up and the carrier compensates the loss. The claim is made to the carrier; it is considered within 30 days.
