In a passenger carriage

On domestic services you may carry one bicycle with you - dismantled and packed, counted against your hand-luggage allowance. There is no separate charge for it as long as you stay within 36 kg and 200 cm for the sum of the three dimensions.

In compartment and open-plan carriages of overnight fast and passenger trains a bicycle travels dismantled and packed in the same way, provided it fits freely in the hand-luggage space.

On regional trains

If the carriage has spaces specifically fitted for bicycles, carriage must be paid for - at the rate for 20 kg of luggage, with an LU-12a receipt or an electronic carriage document.

Intercity and Intercity+

Bicycles are not carried where the carriage has no technical provision for them - that is, no spaces to put them in.

In the luggage van

The charge is that for 20 kg of freight-luggage per bicycle, motorised or not. If other items are handed in together with the bicycle, everything is weighed together and covered by a single receipt for the total weight.

Luggage is generally accepted no earlier than twenty-four hours before the train departs. Handed in earlier, it attracts a storage charge for each day but one; part of a day counts as a whole one.

At the station of origin, or en route, luggage may be handed straight to the luggage van of the train you are travelling on. In that case it is accepted only as far as a station open for luggage operations, without transfer on the way, and payment is made on collection. A tag of the prescribed form is issued as proof of acceptance.

Worth knowing

  • Keeping the bicycle safe during the journey is the passenger's own responsibility.
  • A kayak is charged as 20 kg of luggage.
  • Motorcycles, scooters, mopeds, powered wheelchairs and electric scooters are charged by actual weight.
  • Prams and children's cars in the luggage van are charged as 20 kg per item.

Hand-luggage and luggage allowances are on the Luggage and hand luggage page.
